Daniel, born June 20. 1796, mentioned below. 11. Caleb, born November 10, 1798; settled in Illinois. 12. Benjamin; nothing is known of him, except that he went West. (VI) Daniel Saunders, son of James Saunders (5), was born in Salem, New Hampshire, June 20, 1796. His education was limited to the district schools of his native town. He removed to Andover, Massachusetts, and worked in Woolen mills. In 1820 he began to manufacture in a mill at Andover on his own account, and built up a flourishing business. Later he had mills at Concord, New Hampshire. He was the founder of the city of Lawrence. A portrait in the aldermanic chamber of the city of Lawrence is suitably inscribed: "Founder of the City of Lawrence." This portrait was given to the city by the three sons of Mr. Saunders, Daniel, Charles W. and Caleb Saunders. Accompanying the gift was a letter from the donors, narrating in detail the discovery by their father of the water power of the Merrimac River near the present site of the city, his conception of the vast possibilities of developing it, his energy and perseverance in demonstrating the worth of his ideas to capitalists and his successful efforts in establishing what has become one of the great manufacturing cities of New England within the space of a life time. This letter is preserved in the archives of the city. The letter relates that Mr. Saunders had his attention first called to the possibilities of the water power at Lawrence by a profile plan of the Merrimac river from a survey made before 1830.
